Looking to Buy Z4 in Future / Want owner Opinions (or knowledgable)
I'll be trading my current e36 in January.
I have almost been juggling the idea of a Mini Cooper for gas mileage and price.
But really I want the Z4. I have had the 'lust' for the Z's since I saw one. But never got a roadster in fear of my insurance rate.
It seems; atleast in my area, that there are alot of Z4 used. 2005, 2006 even alot more 2007 in dealership inventories. For much better pricing than I would imagine.
Before doing very little research and just diving for a really good offer. I want to know, what do the actual Enthusiasts that own one think? Would you steer my back towards the 3 series, or is it everything I hoped for?
After previously having a 328 Cab and currently owning a 2003 Z4. Their is no doubt in my mind that I prefer the cab. Z4 is fun to drive, all the time if that is the objective. If you plan on having a coffee while you are driving, forget it. The run-flat's combined with stiff suspension are true roadster performance are sure to shake your fillings out.
I have both. Just sold 2003-Z4 and bought 2008-Z4. Have 335x1, 3series with run flats also. Two, different cars. You are right-unable to drink coffee in Z4. Both are fun to drive. Depends what you are look for in a car. I like to drive with roof down and like 18 inch wheels and sports package with Z4-really fun to drive.
335x1 sedan is a real cruiser with lots of HP. Both cars will do different things for you-also have fun flats on this car too. Able to drink coffee in it.
You have to decide what car is best for you. I couldn't decide to I bought both???
Good Luck!

For me insurance rates are about the same for 2008-335x1 3 series and 2008 Z4. Around $90/mth each for full coverage 250K/500,000K coverage.

Why would you want to "drink coffee" in a Z4? It's a roadster and meant for driving. Heck, I never even turn my radio on. It sounds to me like you need to decide if you want a "sports car" or a "sporty car." There is a difference. The Mini is a great machine and a lot of fun to drive. I don't care for the ergonomics, myself, but that is a personal choice. The Zett 4 is the best sport scar I've ever owned. That said, I've never owned a Porsche or Ferrari, but I've had or driven just about every other non-exotic sport car out there in the past 30 years.
As always, buy the best car you can afford. Look for one with a service history. It will be obvious if it has been looked after. CPOs from the dealer are a good bet, but you will certainly pay more than for an older Z3. It depends on what you want the car to do and how much you want to spend. Decide those two things first and then go for what you want.
It's too bad we all just don't have piles of money, and then we could have all the cars we wanted and the garages to put them in. Good luck!
