Maybe so that ppl don't DIY their O2 sensors (thus making the dealer more moneys)

Jokes aside, one functional purpose for placing the catalytic converters there is that catalytic converters work better when they are hot.

Please do tell how catalytic converters generate heat that would interfere with the engine's operation. I just didn't know that. I know that pretty much all that occurs is a couple of chemical reactions that reduce NOx and CO emissions. I imagine there is some heat generated by these emissions, but I just never thought that would be enough heat to make any difference given the high temperature due to the internal combustion.

Well I'm not the scientist here but...

The chemical reactions generated by the CC are on the whole exothermic. The CC therefore gets hotter than the rest of your typical exhaust pipe, and it would seem to me that putting a heat source on top of your engine might be counterproductive.

Three main reaction types in there:

2NOx → xO2 + N2
2CO + O2 → 2CO2
2CxHy + (2x+y/2)O2 → 2xCO2 + yH2O

Given that quite a bit of the exhaust gases are catalysed, it generates significant heat in addition to the exhaust gas temperatures.
