| 2006 X3 Undercarriage/Transmission Whine I bought a certified pre owned 2006 X3 - roughly 60k miles. It had a few problems that the dealer corrected, but I'm still stuck with a strange noise coming from the undercarriage.
I know it is hard to describe a sound with words. It sounds like a soft metallic whine, or squeal, perhaps like a small chain spinning, or even like some pennies spinning in a glass jar.
Of course I can't tell where it's coming from under the car, but it's certainly more at the front half, so it's engine/transmission related. I would guess transmission.
It only occurs during acceleration, and usually around 1000-2000rpm. It may be occurring at higher revs, but the wind and engine drown out much of the sound.
I first noticed it in a parking garage, where it is apparent to anyone. Now it's getting louder and I hear it as I drive down the street.
I took it to the dealer, and they said it would "take too long to diagnose" and "we'll just have to wait for it to get worse." That's not the answer I was looking for.
Does anybody have some tips of what this could be? Thanks!
