01 x5 3.0 heater issue

My wife has a 2001 x5 3.0l and live in another state then me at the moment.

she says the heater has not been blowing cold, unless she is sitting at idle for a few minutes it starts to warm up.

she also has told me that when it is cold outside and going up the rather steep hills to get home the temp guage drops down to the colder area...rather then normally riding right in the middle area...

I know this is pretty vague but i am not there and just looking for any advise
