I just sold my 2008 335iDinan with 285,000 km. From new, it used a litre of oil in 20,000km, then I would add a litre of Castrol 5/30 full synthetic and after another 9,000 km or so, it was ready for the BMW recommended oil change, which I had done at a BMW dealer. After the last oil change, it is still on the way to making 20,000 on the first litre. I just sold the car and my 335is will be treated the same.
Well as they say your mileage will vary - some of it depends on what you consider to be 'the best' - there is a lot of info out there, so depending on your perspective, the car’s current situation, and intended purpose...
Regardless of the base stock used by the manufacture of the motor oil, there are about 3 major oil ingredient manufactures from which the oil manufactures can make / source their secret recipe from. BMW recently changed their official oil supplier from Castrol to Shell - our local dealer flushed out their Castrol stock in Feb of 2015. Shell's oil new base stock technology is interestingly based off of natural gas, which has a nice ecological ring to it.

Hi, I have 2009 328i and accidentally poured 5w-20 oil instead of the recommended 5w-30. I'm using Liqui Moly. I am new to european cars and it's my bad i did not checked the oil used. Do I have to drain and and replace with 5w-30? Or wait till my next change? I'm also doing my own research and came across this article and it seems to be okay until my next oil change. Thoughts?
