1000 grit sandpaper is supposed to be used on the clear coat ... right?

I've always used 2000 grit on clear coat finishes.

Hmm, interesting. Paintscratch says to use 1000 on the clear coat followed by rubbing compound. Or even just rubbing compoud and no sandpaper. Do you think 1000 is too rough for clearcoat?

In my opinion yes. However you could try using the 1000 grit in an out of the way spot to see how it comes out first.
Is there something on the paint, or are you just trying to freshen it up?

I'm touching up some scratches on my car. One is pretty big on the sideskirt. I got the brush bottle from paintscratch along with clearcoat, and assorted sandpaper. I think that the 1000 is the least harsh in the bunch, I think I'm gonna recheck though.

i would use 2000 first, if thats not enough use 1000-1500, then buff with compouds with less and less grit, usually 3 different grit compounds works out well.

1000 is a little too rough for general wetsanding. On old paint surfaces start @ 2000 and work your way down if you trying to remove paint scratches (this is assuming that rubbing compound didn't work)

If its freshly laid paint, I prefer to do a run of 1500 then 2000 to finish off the smooth shine
