The main reason we wear helmets in a race car is to keep the cage from killing you.... there is a very minimal chance that the car will collapse enough to encounter your head... thus the cage keeping the car away from your head and body... and thus the helmet keeping your head away from the cage.
and... to again use the word 'thus'....
Thus the illigality.
