Exclamation M3 vs 335i Dinan

YouTube - Shoot Out - BMW "Sibling Rivalry" Dinan 335i vs. M3

Funny how the M3 won everything and they still chose the 335i. I know, I know, Price... but still

I am kinda shocked actually that the dinan stage 3 could not overtake the M3 in the 1/4 mile. Weight is virtually the same, the 335i has 165 more ft.-lbs of torque and only 8 less hp. I guess the M3 is just that good.

Bimmerguy, remember that gearing plays a role too.

Now THAT was fun to watch. Agree that some minor other adjustments like a short shifter and some human factors may be an issue with them so close. Still, the turning and crispness of performance by the ///M coupled with the styling superiority and badging cache make it tough to swallow the Dinan 335 over the ///M. Plus, the cost of the tuning etc. closes the price gap considerably as well, making the jump to the ///M all the easier. Lastly, having done this exact analysis, it sure is nice to have the V8 aluminium race engine naturally aspirated PLATFORM from which to build/begin!

On the price issue, if you are not, as most of us are not, prepared to simply shell out stupid high $$ for the new ///M3, perhaps waiting a year or two and then swooping down on one for tons less is the answer?? With, oh, I dunno, some decedent "placeholder" car like an E39 M5 or E46 M3 Vert in the meantime while we watch for ay Gremlins present in the new E92 M3???

Just some thoughts...

And, um, learn to SPELL DINAN...!!!

or Prof will HUNT you down!

Somehow, tunning a bimmer offsets the car (like the 50-50 ballance of the M3). Don't get me wrong, I'm all into tunning and am planning on doing some modif. on mine, but it somehow takes away the majic:!?

Sound like a retard, I know, but seriousely, you guys smell what I'm digging, ey?!?!?!?!

and the drag was shocking to me too, torque should get the car off the line, should it not, especially 165 more of it. I think it's not the gear ratio, i'm convinced it's the power delivery. Your engine can make 1000's of horsepower, but if you can't put the to the wheels, it's useless (just destroying our plannet with the fumes... i know how much all of us care about that?!?!?!?!) ...seriously though, hp at the wheels matters, not at the cranksheft!

and about my spelling, uh... it's the new Dinon tunning company, what!?!? you guys never hurd of it, pshshshsh, newbs!?!?!?!?! Dinan is old news now

I agree with their assessment. Minor tweaks and even swapping in a different rear end with 5-10% lower gearing in the 335i would have made it clearly the winner in performance and price.

also their drag race, anyone notice they didnt rev the engines at all? they started like, off idle at which point a TT is at a disadvantage because the turbos arent spooling immediately. give it some juice on the 1/4 boys!

335i ftw IMO.

I like that they pointed out that they seemed to enjoy the feeling and driving the M better. It is the same as when the regular 911's get pitted against the Vettes. Sure they match the performance very close and come at a cheaper price, but none of them say they would rather have the vette. Yeah you can get another BMW to match the performance on paper of an M3, but the feel won't be there in the steering etc. Is the feeling worth it? For E36's (the only M3 I have ever driven) I would definitely say so.

What's sad is that I've seen worse. There was a Dinan e46 m3 in for service at the dealership i used to work at. This kid was like hey did you guys see that "Dylan" m3. I turned to him and said, "You're a fucking idiot."

That is all

I suppose this would be a good time to bring up that I was profoundly underwhelmed by my test drive of the new M3 last weekend?
