In Europe they have clay and gravel fields. The last time I was in Germany my team and I played on gravel. I personally prefer grass its not as harsh especially when you're sliding across it!! The reason for gravel (at least where we were) is because of the fact that they use them so often grass would not hold up.
They save the grass fields for championships and such.
basically lower maintenance required here.
