It is a great option that was recently added. You can use it to provide links to the exact post to which you are aking reference. This is better than using the single-post view, because this way people can be directed to a specific post, but can still brwse the rest of the thread.

It's more for using pingbacks/trackbacks ala blogs, so if you link to a post from a blog there'll be a link at the bottom of the page saying "This blog linked to this post" and a link back to the blog
