my e30 ecu box was behind the glove compartment.
i had to pull that off b 4 i could unhook the ecu. its silver w/a big wiring harness going into it.
then u have to open it. be careful when u bend the tabs back, they break easily.
then w/clean &static free hand [touch a grounded object like a big metal desk/post going into the ground] remove the old chip, then place gently the new one.

be careful to make sure all the pins line up and that the chip is going the same way as the old one.
once it is in, start the car up to make sure it works. it sucks if u put it back together and it dosnt work properly.
i forgot to mention there is a notch or an arrow at one end of the chips. make a note of the direction it is going.
put it all back together and have fun!

Mark

I have heard by other chip makers of long term damage done by random chips.
Do you mean random as in an incorrect chip for the car's ecu, or random as in correct chip model but a bad chip?

Im thinking about getting my 325is modified with a Dinan chip, they usually go for $70-124 on ebay (probably all copies).

Do any of you think damage is possible with a copied chip?

If this were an issue i dont think it would be worth it. I could not afford to repair my car's ecu. I would be screwed.

70-124 is a burned copy of the chip if it is at all. your taking a chance thats for sure......beyond that i cant really give you any more insite because id rather IMO buy the real deal, i know its expensive but for things like a chip or turbo or anything that may be complicated than go legit, stuff like intakes and exhausts you can budget.

Dayamn...I spoke to maximumperf via e-mail about 2 months ago...just didnt get round to ordering the chip as i was buying alloys...

Now I want the chip he has disappeared! Arse...

I have spoken to a friend of mine who states that a copy of a chip is just as reliable as the original...there should be no difference in performance or any harm done to the engine...except if the original chip harms your engine that is!

I found he was selling the E36 318is chip for $25 and there were a thousand or so positive responses from buyers...

ANYONE know where this chap has gone, new ebay name or an alternative seller...

There is no way I am spending $400 on something i can get for $25...could be the yiddish in me

James

well i got one for my car, forgot who i bought it off, but i got the dinan chip i believe i duno they're all the same, and it ran me about 40 bucks US and iv had it for a year nad it works great, my cars having fuel related problems but thats cause of either fuel pressure or an injector, not really sure which one, the car runs great after about 5 min, but the first 5 min is all crappy and stuff, i duno what the deal is, maybe pumps slow to bring up presure? anyways the chips are good for the most part, never heard of any faulty ones.

I have been looking into the chips for my e36 and personally I would not buy a knock off. The chip can be made differently and with different less expensive metals and components, thus making it cheaper, and not as high quality. With most computer parts it is better to spend the money and many times you get what you pay for. I would rather spend the money for the peace of mind, knowing that my chip is backed by a reputable company, not some guy making copies(which I am sure are illegal). Not too say I would not skimp somewhere else, just not on something this complicated.

I have not bought my chip yet but will be buying the conforti chip from www.turnermotorsport.com for $250 new. Comes with easy install directions, warrenty, and someone to answer any questions I have about it.

well my 2 cents
