I agree, it would be hard to tell the difference unless you knew what you were looking for. It needs more to set it apart.

I think it looks really good.

IDK, most of the time BMW doesn't change very much on the M's. I think it goes along with the trend of past M cars.

There is just too much carried over. Maybe an updated aerodynamics pkg, (nice wheels tho) would set it apart just the little bit needed to truly make it original. otherwise its a 1er with ///M grills and aftermarket wheels and a spoiler.

dvmotorsports is on a distinguished road
that is the tii prototype. more info and pics can be found here and here. There is also a concept photo showing a steering wheel with LED style shift indicators built into it. I cannot locate the picture at this time though.
