actually the M1 was considered a 'rush job' so BMW asked Lambo to design, engineer and produce the M1 but while designing, Lambo went bust and BMW had to start over again with the M1. BMW had to basically 'steal' or take back all the body work molds from lambo.
To be considered a "Racing Car" a company must produce and sell 400 units to the general public. This was quite unfortunate for the M1 since it was about $60k in 1971, compare that to the Ferrari 308GTS less than $32k in 1971.
On top of that, while the M1 was being designed, rules in racing were changed, thus when the first M1 came out, it wasnt competitive.
but i would LOVE to get one of those babies
