Gearheads can debate until they throw a rod, but the fact remains that Porsche made a better track performance car than either AMC or Chevrolet did between the 1960s and 80s. That Porsche? The 911.
That’s why Michael Essa and Nick Richards, co-owners of GSR Autosport, just might have a leg up in the eBay “BUILT” web series airing online from July 16 through August 27. The competition pits four garages with different backgrounds against each other in an automotive tune off. The catch: all four vehicles must be bought through eBay Motors, and be built using only parts sourced from eBay. In Essa and Richards’ case, the car they chose was a 1984 Porsche 911.
While that stipulation hardly limits the selection, it also levels the playing field quite a bit between the competing groups.
Over the 10-episode series, fans will vote on which shop deserves the "BUILT" title. After that, all four vehicles will be auctioned on eBay to benefit a charity of each garage's choosing. In the case of GSR's 911, the auction will benefit SEMA Cares. Each of the four cars will get a final curtain call at SEMA in Las Vegas.
The series also isn’t about performance driving or the individual car’s abilities in that area. Instead, the shops pick a car to best suit their vision. Porsche’s 911 fits the bill in this case, with a house dedicated to performance driving and drifting.
That’s not true across the board, though. Instead, the German car will face off against a 1966 Chevrolet El Camino, a 1970 Jeep Grand Cherokee Commando and a 1968 Chevrolet G20 van. The shops behind those cars come from completely different walks of the auto enthusiast world as well, including hot rodders, high-end customizers and rock crawlers.
There’s no way of telling what will happen to any of the cars, but with eBay Motors’ worldwide catalog of new parts within reach, it’s sure to be impressive.
