* First eight-cylinder for the BMW M3 sports car.
* Supreme performance ensured by 309 kW/420 hp from 4.0 litres.
* Maximum torque of 400 Newton-metres (295 lb-ft) at 3, 900 rpm, 85 per cent of maximum torque over a speed range of 6,500 rpm.
* Unique thrust and muscle ensured by consistent implementation of the M high-speed engine concept, maximum engine speed 8,300 rpm.
* Consistent lightweight construction of engine and ancillary units, new V8 power unit one of the lightest eight-cylinders in the world, lighter than the straight-six power unit in the former model.
* Variable camshaft control, low-pressure double-VANOS for an optimum charge cycle, system offering full power and performance even with normal engine oil pressure.
* Eight individual throttle butterflies for spontaneous engine response.
* Consistent and reliable oil supply with longitudinal and lateral acceleration up to 1.4 g ensured by two oil pumps and wet sump oil lubrication optimised for supreme dynamic behaviour.
* Exhaust system optimising cylinder charge, optimised for weight and function by means of internal high-pressure remoulding, exhaust emissions fulfil EU4 and LEV 2 standards.
* Upgraded MSS60 engine control unit for optimum coordination of all engine functions with the various control systems in the car.
* Ion flow technology recognising and distinguishing engine knocking phenomena as well as misfiring and miscombustion by measurement of ion flow in the combustion chambers.
* Brake Energy Regeneration with intelligent alternator control.
Its the same nm rating as the 4.0l m60 motor.. but over a much larger rev range.. the design of the engine is more for revs then for torque.. you can either have a rev monster with high hp or low down torque, not, generally both. Thats still plenty of torque IMO.

Ditto. Have you seen the redlines on some of those torquey ass american muscle cars? Even trucks that put out boat loads of torque have low redlines adn horsepower. Even check out the 530d motor in the e60 lineup.
Bow, your car must be a 95 or below, right? This is the M60 (4.0L)
96 was when bmw introduced the M62 (4.4L)
I'm curious how the new M3 would do against the new AUDI RS4. I saw one the one day in the parking lot. I was very impressed with AUDI's looks and performance.

LOS
Given that the RS4 was in the minds of the designers of the new M3, I have a hard time believing that we will not beat it in every category by at least a tenth of a second.
Would you say, this is a fair comparison? I wasn't sure when I mentioned it. The price for the RS4 is around $65k.
I have to say, BMW competitors are getting closer & closer. I have never been a fan of AUDI until one day an 8A caught my eye. That's the day I realized Audi was going to be a serious Mercedes/BMW contender. They keep coming up with interesting products. I read somewhere about their new super car for around $120k. I have to find the link.
I'm sorry, I don't mean to change the topic on this thread. I was just thinking is going to be tougher for luxury car makers. They have to get it done right the first time if they want to keep their old customers.
