Water pump replacement 1998 528ia

Is it relatively easy for a DIY'er to change out the water pump in a 1998 528i?
I just got done replacing the Thermostat, but I'm still having the overheating problem. Also, with those water pumps, are there different impellers (plastic or metal)*...and if so which one is prefferred on replacement part like that...?

Hi, I just changed mine on a V8 735i, Piece of cake, really, make sure you make a drawing of the belt, I purchased mine from BM which cost me 25% more but comes with METAL impeller, dont go for plastic although cheaper,you will regret it,I have had may stories on plastc impellers. Please spend the extra and save yourself a nightmare.

Thanks Marti....I appreciate the feedback and I've ordered the water pump already with the metal impeller....
Is there anywhere I can find some simple step by step instructions with the tools needed etc on it?

Hi, These are for a 7 series v8 but the method is the same as are the tools required, after the diagrams you will see titles undrlined 'click' on these they are a step by step, so it should be the same process,

p.s the 32mm spanner is to get the viscous fan off, which you should be able to get from a good car shop. all you do is put on and give it a good whack with a hammer, maybe a few times, REMEMBER it is a lefthand thread opposite to normal!!!! so undoes the other way to a normal nut, takes a couple of secs to work out when you have the spanner on it ! Ha Ha!
