Question Are they lying to me?

Hi, I am new to the forum and have a question. I bought a 05' 325ci about 10 months ago while still under warranty. About a month after I bought it, I was in a fast food drive thru and noticed a barely audible ticking noise start. I called the dealership to have it checked out, and to make a long story short, they finally got tired of looking for what was making the sound and told me it was the type of engine I had (high efficiency EPA?)and to expect it since they were solid bolted lifters like what they use in a diesel engine. It has gradually gotten louder, not to the point of a knock, but it worries me since it has since ran out of warranty (and since it took them 9 months to figure out I had a bad alternator, not real impressed with the mechanics at this dealership). I am hoping this is not the case, but the thought did cross my mind that maybe they were just telling me this since I am female. Has anyone else ran across this or know anything about this type of engine?
Thanks for all your help.

Well, 9/10 the dealership is going to lie to you about something. It's the way all of them operate. Anyways, what state do you live in? Because if memory serves me correct there was a "M56" SULEV motor for Massachusetts and California. To tell the difference between an M54 or M56 pop the hood on your vehicle and compare the valve covers to these pictures.

When you determine what you have get back to me and I'll see if I can answer some more questions you might have.

First of all, welcome.

The first thing I thought when I read your post was what BimmerE39 said. Please let us know if you have the M56 SULEV engine. We'll go from there.

Sorry for the delay. I didn't get a chance to pop the hood, but I am sure it is the pic on the right because it has the SULEV on my title. When I ran it through Carfax and saw that I didn't know what it meant.

I am beginning to like my BMW LESS everyday, in fact close to the point of sheer hate. I tried to call the service dealership that has worked on the same noise in the motor on and off for the past 9 months again today. This is the 3rd time I have tried to call them in the past 7 days because what they thought was the alternator making the noise, is not. They yet again did not fix the problem and now they won't return my calls. While I LOVE the way BMW's look, I am very seriously thinking about trading it off. If you could offer any insight it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Also, I have a low beam headlight out now, so do you happen to know what kind my car takes. I went out on line and it shows some for over $100 per bulb, and then some for about $10 a bulb?

I don't think I ever answered you, I live in Missouri, and bought the car from Luxury Motors in Downers Grove, IL.

Thank you SO much for trying to help me.

what kind of headlight do you have?
like this-means xenon. Bulbs are expensive, but you can buy them online for much less.

Yes that looks like them. Plus they said that I need to change both of them at the same time even though only 1 seems to be burned out?

You change them both at the same time because if one of them just burned out, chances are decent the other will go soon as well. Just better to be safe than sorry. Good luck with your ride. I certainly hope they get their collective heads out of their butts and figure your car out. The last thing we want around here is to have someone with a hate-on for BMW's because of shitty service.

Thank you so much for all your help. I did call BMW customer relations last night and file a compliant, so I expect to get a nasty phone call today from the dealership. The rep stated they will sometimes have a traveling engineer come in when they can't figure out a problem, so hopefully this will solve the issue. On a different note, is the SULEV motor the worse one you can have and would you recommond me trading now before I start to have major problems with it, and do you know what issues have been tied to this type of motor?

Thanks for everyone's help, you guys are the best!!!!

If anything, they should be groveling at your feet...seriously. They should be treating you like gold, trying to keep you as a BMW buyer. They should be doing pretty much everything in their power to rectify this situation. Demand they get it right!(don't be a dick about it, respectful and professional is the best way to go).
