Testing... Testing, One-Two... One-Two.

Hi guys.

Been trying to get onto the forum for a few days now, turns out my e-mail is filtering the activation address - probably should've seen that coming.

However, I'm here now.

My name is Vard, I'm 23, near Swindon in Wiltshire, UK.

In automotive terms, my forte is Rovers (yeah yeah, I know, heard it all before), and particularly turbocharged Rovers. I currently own two 820 Vitesse fastbacks, and a 420 GSi Turbo.

However, I've also got a poorly 530i V8 sitting outside my driveway at the moment. Bought as a project, with two intentions in mind - ostensibly it was bought for a banger rally next August - it fit our criteria of big inside, big(ish) engine, RWD and manual, with a kicker that it'll be me beating my friend to the V8, after he beat me to the V6 with his new Reliant Scimitar GTE.

However, in my mind at least, once it's back from the rally, it's purpose will be drifting.

It's still here because when Alex brought it up from Devon last weekend (ostensibly for him to have a weekend up here, realistically for me to day insure it and go have a bit of a thrash about on a big empty bit of tarmac), it was having rough running and stalling issues and was significantly down on power, and was also overpressurising the coolant system.

I was intending to drive it Saturday and get a first hand impression of it, instead of investigating on Alex's descriptions on Sunday; but it became somewhat obvious why when it blew the stat housing into two pieces and pumped some lovely oily coolant everywhere.

Whilst I'm almost entirely a newbie to BMWs (so engine codes are swimming, jumbled around in my head like numbersoup) the threads I've been browsing are M60B30 and M60B40 based, as we're contemplating a conversion.

Overall I probably will be lurking more than posting - I just wanted to make sure I didn't find my account deleted because I wasn't posting.

Hello...
Your symptoms are quite a regular question here mukka... Either do a Topic search, or define whether there is deffo oil in the coolant and maybe have the bores' compression tested...

Oh, it's definitely HGF, Dabsy, I've owned too many K series Rovers not to be able to recognise it!

I was thinking about doing a compression test to find out which bank has gone, but looking at the cost of the gaskets, when you consider that the inlet manifold has to come off aaaanyway, it's not really worth trying to save the, oh, fifty quid or so of gaskets I'll need to do the other bank at the same time.

The job doesn't look too troubling really, looking at the workshop manuals. I was a bit concerned with the fact that they seem to suggest I'd need no fewer than TWELVE proprietary tools to do the head gaskets, but upon closer examination, I can do it with two. One metal bar, with a load of electrical tape wrapped around it to meet the slot in the backplate when I lock the fly, and one carefully cut to size block of steel to slot between the cam locking points.

Hahaha two tools is good... Don't buy any though ;-)... Just label stuff lol
Get both heads off and have a REAL good look at them, any doubts then get a second opinion at a re-manufacturer... Best to do both for peace of mind...

Aye, the next step is having the heads off for inspection - if they're fine, I'll put it back together with fresh gaskets, and a skim if necessary (natch).
I understand BMW heads are particularly unappreciative of excess heat and pressure, so I'm holding out precious little hope that they'll just be fine with a cleanup.

If they're not, oh well, it's M60B40 time, y0.

Fortunately, I'm good friends with a tech in Lovetts BMW in Swindon, so I have support on hand, should I need the heads seeing to, or just want a second opinion.

Thats a myth, all cylinder heads can be exposed to extremeties and still survive... It's how long they've been allowed to accept this abuse that matters !! German engineering is the finest (Nikasil exception)... I hate ze Germans, but effin damn great cars eh?

I clearly bought that thing with that fault. It was a sight unseen eBay gamble, and on the journey home the bottom hose flew off as I gave it a bit of a hoof of the loud pedal. I noticed it when the heater stopped working and the temperature gauge just started to rise. Fortunately I could pull over before it got hot.

After reattaching it and refilling with coolant, it behaved fine and I used it for about 1000 miles. Then it went breasts skyward the other weekend.

Personally, as the engine has done 197k I'm pretty much keen on dumping it, turning it into a coffee table and finding a replacement. But if it can be repaired and I did not cause damage by unknowingly using it when it had HGF, then happy days!
