Hey guys, thanks for the welcome(s).......the help I need I guess is find a decent bimmer-loving mechanic who wont rip giant holes in my purse (read purse...) and is somewhere in London. My beautiful E30 is playing up, the usual probs in idle (this is not my first) revs up and down, dropping out and stalling, had the valves cleaned and timing checked, was better for a few days but now have this horrible shudder and the smell of petrol is strong. It may be the vacuum, but even as a non-blonde, my skills underneath the bonnet are in development. Any advice and finger pointing in the right direction (and not to point and laugh) would be most welcome...

when did this start? just while you were driving? bought it that way?, one day just started doing it?. have you had the idle contro valve checked? or checked it your self? you said it smells of petrol? sound kinda like it is running to rich maybe an O2 sesor died....

It started a few weeks back when the revs went mad in idle, not in park only in drive (auto), the valves were cleaned and all good again for 2 weeks, then started again, same thing sitting in traffic rev's going wild up and down then dropping below 5000 and cutting out. Then had it tuned up and 2 days later it was sluggish on pulling out, surging in idle (both drive and park, but much worse in drive) surging is like heavy breathing or slow cough which made me think vacuum, i can see the front end going up and down when sitting in traffic and then i got the smell of petrol, pretty rough right now, so its sitting outside awaiting some TLC.....its not cutting out anymore though...

miles since the o2 sensor was changed and current miles? i think i is the o2 sensor... causeing some of this crazyness... also check you intak boot for cracks

thanks for the advice, the guy I bought this from did a lot on it, so no real service history, but will check out the O2 sensor and get back to you...thanks again
