Please help! E34 520i problems starting then auto box goes into limp?????

Hi I've been trying to find out what's up with my motor E34 520i and stumbled across this forum.
Don't know if anyone can help but here goes: Car is '94 520ise would not start on Friday night, was low on petrol and very wet so eft it overnight. Started Saturday moring but very lumpy didnt drive far before cutting out again and failing to start. a light appeared on the dash where the auto box displayis i.e. E P (Economy Park) which I've now discovered is the limp home warning......... Grateful for any assistance regards Phil.
