I'm looking for a new project car. I've always wanted a BMW. I've got a few grand to spend and was wondering what would be a good car to buy and rebuild, possibly do some SCCA racing in a stock class. Mainly just to drive and have fun. I've had a couple land rovers both of which I have worked on myself. Suspension lifts motor work etc. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a particular series or model that you are drawn to? There are stand out gems throughout the range, it really comes down to your personal preference.
When I was a teenager my neighbor and a 635 M6. I have since thought that was the coolest thing on earth. I know an M6 is not going to be in the budget. But a 635 possible? I seem to be leaning towards that decade. Simpler to work on. However I'm concerned what kind of a mess I'll find myself in and what kind of parts availability there is. And for performance parts as well.

Well my advice is to get an E30. Their older but they still have a variety of parts available. The E30 is lightweight, has good power, and excellent handling. They can be found for not much money which is a plus.
Thanks Vader. Is there any year in particular that I should look for? I've always liked the round headlight front end. Any thing I should keep an eye out for? Common things? I know I want t a 6cyl and a standard transmission. As far as mods I want to keep it to what someone would have done back then. No coffee can mufflers or 20s. What are common mods for these? Suspension and motor

I would stay with a 6 cyl for sure. The 4 cyl is way to underpowered. I like the 88-92 years the best and there still decently priced. If your going to track it then get a coupe. With a suspension upgrade, and some lightweight wheels, short throw shifter they can be really nimble.
They Definitley are. I looked at one before getting my E36. Probably why I got into BMWs. However they are quite expensive to maintain. Parts are rare and expensive. Not many left either.
