Just stopping by to say hello.. I just got a 99 540i which I absolutely love she is just so much fun to drive. She's only got 80k, came with a radar that's in the dash, 20in wheels that a little too flashy for me but..... rear shade which is almost necessary here in Texas... looking forward to learning and chit chatten.
There are a couple of things to watch for on the M62TU engine:
Coolant leak from radiator end tanks (plastic)
Expansion bottle cracking
Intake monifold leaks from craks in the ducting to gasket failure
Intake manifold rear cover diaphragm failure (blows grey smoke on start up)
Other than that take care of it (including servicing the Auto) and you should enjoy the experience.
Cool, thanks for the info.... we always stay on top of the regular maintenance we have changed the oil and will be changing the tranny fluid next weekend. We have a few things that need to be done to it.... the traction light is on and the odometer lights are not all working.. it was working for the most part when we first got it, but now, you can barely read it, but we will get her taken care of.
With the Transmission oil, you need to take it to a specialist shop that will get the oil out of the gear box and torque converter, and make sure that they change the oil filter with a genuine filter. Apparently some of the aftermarket filters collapse and restrict the oil flow.
Good luck
I just noticed in the engne bay photo that you don't have the hose connecting the secondary air pump intake to the post air filter outlet on the air filter housing. Were you doing some work when that photo was taken?

The post on the air filter housing is a dummy, or am I missing something?
As long as its blocked off its not a problem. Mine just looks a little different with the connection to the secondary air pump. Also has the Zionsville all aluminium radiator and electric fan setup. Zionsville Autosport: BMW E39 - E38 Super Duty Cooling Kit
Here is a better pic and as you can see the inlet is false, there is no hole into the air box and this has not been sealed almost like it's aftermarket.
Omg.. I love it. I love being able to get around people when needed lol. I heard her growl for the 1st time a couple days ago.
No, not really, not other then the DSC light and the odometer etc lights... my rear shade quite working.....although, I am quite irritated that I can't play my Ipod and stuck with the radio only, but I have a fix for that on the way As for the motor and tranny no issues.
Have you tried out the sports or semi auto/manual mode as yet? That's when you can really hear & feel the power that these cars have, if you want to go that step further, turn off your DSC as well as going into manual mode. To go into sport mode, shift the gear lever to the left from the drive position, and then to go manual from the sports position bump the gear stick forward ot back to shift up or down through the gears. The current gear or mode will be displayed on the dash.
What's the fix that you are implementing for the iPod integration?
