Hi, I bought a second hand bmw e36 320i last year. Now i got this problem of smelling oil on exhaust. After investigate leak came through back of engine (cover gasket). I replaced the gasket but next day I smell oil again. I jacked up car and saw that the back exhaust manifold was leaking. Could it be the manifold gasket? How will it effect the performance of the engine - will it be like rough idling etc.. ? Can I drive 100 miles like that. Should there be oil leaking out from the exhaust manifold?
Can you help me answering these questions. It is a M50 engine with 118000 miles on it.
Normally there should not be oil leaking out of the exhaust manifold and I would think it would be the gasket that has failed in most cases. Although I personally have not encountered this problem (knocks on wood) I've seen other cars with this problem.
