Was searching for conversations and opinions before I purchased an '02 525i and came across this forum. Now that I have the vehicle, thought it would be wise to join.

I am also looking for advice on the best and most economical solution for a code reader. I have seen posts for ACTRON scanners, any advice is appreciated. As well as a reputable source for replacement mats.

As Bretski said, code readers can go from very basic to quite complex. My local auto parts store does free code scanning. Find one near you that does as well and ask to try the scanner. The one my store uses is a midrange one that's about $200. Tells you what the code is right from the device.

As for floor mats, I haven't seen anywhere better then BavAuto. Their floor mats are awesome because you can get them with "BMW" or your model number embroidered on them.

I guess I just want one that will give me the code so I can find out what the problem may be. And hopefully find a DIY solution for it.

I did, in fact, go to a local auto parts store and they not only sold the devices, but also checked your car for free, like you mentioned. The store clerk asked why I was considering buying one when he could do it for free? lol

They carried the Actron product line with about 5 different models. Just not sure what would be considered overkill for a weekend warrior like myself.

Come to find out, the error message I was getting was the infamous p0491 and 92. Plenty of posts on that!

For what its worth, the ScanGauge II is a decent code reader and provides additional gauges for obdII cars. Amazon.com: ScanGauge II Ultra Compact 3-in-1 Automotive Computer with Customizable Real-Time Fuel Economy Digital Gauges: Automotive
They are definitively worth looking into.
