I'm happy I found this site...I do have a question about my 00 740IL automatic transmission. How can I check the level? Should I change the fluid at 165K?

Not sure how to check on your 740...does it have a tranny dipstick???

Anyway, need more information regarding your the fluid change. If it has never been changed at 165k then you are about 2 or maybe 3 changes behind. If it was changed less than 60k miles ago then I would say you are ok, but coming up on another change.

Tranny changes should be about 60k to 80k miles, but check you owners manual.

I've changed my fluid every 30,000 miles or so, so I've done it twice. It costs a little more in the long run but I like to keep everything nice and lubricated.

The owner's manual as well as a BMW service shop I used to go to says that the transmission is 'sealed for the life of the transmission' and never needs to be changed on the 740. That seems odd to me. I honestly can't find the dipstick to even check-I assume the OBD would alert me if I have a problem. I just want to keep the car going as long as possible since I love driving it.
