Hi

New E46 1998 owner here, from Brisbane, AU.
Hopefully I won't have any questions about fixing my car, but I reserve the right to ask one if something pops out and I know it would be plenty...

Welcome to Bimmerwerkz! Their seems to be a large Australian crowd here. Feel free to post pictures! Do you know the history on the car?

No history unfortunately. It is a blue e46 318i from 1998 with M3 wheels. Running a little bit rough so I have changed the plugs, cables, oil, checked the vaccum hoses (one was disconnected), and it still idles not as smooth as it should. Will probably ask a few q after checking everything and "googling" the forum if you have any suggestions let me know. Battery needs to be charged but I don't think this is the cause, or maybe I am wrong?

The battery shouldn't be the cause. Define "rough"?

Oh, and 1998 is still E36. 1999/2000 is E46.

My one is e46 from 06/98
Rough as in not very smooth idle? Does not matter if cold or hot. It sounds more like running on 3 cylinders.

Welcome to the Werkz. Always good to have another Aussie on board.

Does it rev up freely, or does it struggle to rev?

Can you hear all of the injectors firing? You can use a long screw driver if you don't have a mechanics stethascope, stick the pointy end on the body of the injector and the handle in you ear. You should be able to hear a sharp click each time the injector fires.

With the engine running disconnect a spark plug lead and see if the idle gets worse or not, if it doesn't make the idle rougher (or cause the engine to stall) you know you've found the cylinder thats causing the problem.

Can you smell unburnt fuel in the exhaust?

Production of the E46 started in May 1998, but they are considered model year 1999. Their is no 98 E46.

Thanks Brettski. Done all that, but what I have found was the crank case vent hose at the back of the head cover was leaking. Haven't found it at the first time cause it was right under the rubber sleeve covering the breather hose and one of the water hoses. It was exactly where number 3 is pointing at on this picture.
