Hello, new 525tds owner, Fuel problem?

Hello everyone, im a new member here, i just bought a 1998 525tds today, i previously drove a 1994 honda integra, and what a difference.
It is such a comfortable car, much more relaxing to drive.

It has 143k miles and is running well except for a problem with the fuel, it runs out of diesel when the tank is not empty, when you fill it to the brim the guage only reaches 3/4 full, it drives fine for a good bit, not sure how far yet as i have done 100 miles from full and its grand, however when i collected it the guage registered 3/4 after 15 miles it had dropped to empty and the car stalled (fuel warning light never illuminated), so i put in 5 gallons of diesel drove 5 miles, the guage went to 1/2 then dropped to empty after 5 miles and stalled again!

It appeared to be doing 1MPG. how ever the mpg clock was saying about 50mpg..... so i filled it to the brim, drove 60 miles, filled it again, and it had only used 1.5 gallons.

I think there is a problem in the fuel tank, there are no leaks nor smoke so the pump, sender must be at fault.


Has anyone one any ideas???

My guess is a fuel system leak that introduces air to the system only while running. Good luck and

bought the workshop manual, i think the pump that feeds the surge pot is broken, when the fuel level drops i only have access to the fuel in the surge pot about 2 litres, when its full its ok as the fuel is over the walls of the surge pot.

ill find out at the weekend, but this is my plan.

Hi all,

I think i have it sorted out, i replaced 3 O rings in the fuel tank, 1 on the left side where the fuel goes to the engine, one on the line to the suction jet pump. and one on the pump itsself where it connects to the white swirl chamber. seems to be running fine now.
