engine warning light issue? - BMW Forum

Hi Guys im a new member and have owned a lovely Blue 318 Se for the last 4 years and treat it like a women ( no i dont shout at it regulary) however today my engine warning light came on and according to the manual its saying that the "emmision valves have deteriorated" last week coincidentally i put some wynns engine valve and injector cleaner in a full tank of petrol and its about half full now . Has anyone ever had this and if so what clues could the give me ?

Your engine warning light can come on for many issues, you really need diagnostics undertaken or the codes pulled to be sure.

[Cheers i'll get that checked out however someone commented that it may also be a spark plug now coated up the the (Wynn's cleaner) i put in a week ago so im going to try the cheap option first, chhers for yous comments i'll let ya know how it goes

Fill with gas...reset code by disconnecting battery for 3 minutes........run tank of gas out. Code may reappear. Repeat above and code should clear.

It's not a coincidence....using the Wynns caused the code. Do not use Wynns again.

Hi I have just tried that twice and its not cleared it i'll try a plug change hopefully its that. Failing that i'll have to get a diagnostic done on it. Cheers for responding anyway.

Hope the plug change helps. See if you have an "emission valve" in the recirculation system. Most engine codes are emmissions related and the wynn stuff may have dislodged enough gunk to foul the plugs and an emission valve. I don't think this code is referring to your mechanical engine valves.

I am not familiar with your emissions, but check for OPR, ESV, heat control, and other possible valves in your vacuum system that could have been effected by the Wynns which is essentially a solvent.

why is that "wynn's cleaning agent so bad and why is it sold if it can cause issues like this? im really not that technically minded and i appreciate your help however a lot of the code stuff is over my head. What would you do? the enginge is now running rough and it sounds like its only firing three cylinders. im reluctant to pay BMW major Bucks that may only take ten mins (you know what there like). so i'll kepp you informed after theplug change. Sounds to me you have a problem with the MAF, unplug it(whilst engine running) and if there's no change, the MAF is shot.

Hopefully thats ok, It may be the plugs as you say.

As for the Wynns cleaning agent, its for lets say............. normal cars, BMW's dont need it.

Greetings,

I'm a new user.. My wife and I own dual 2003 BMWs. Hers is a 3.0 Z4 and mine 330XI. On occasion, the service engine light on my 330 XI comes on.
This usually happens after a fill up. The cause turns out to be the gas cap was not securely tightened. The following proceedure has kept the light off for a while:
turn the cap to the right until it clicks, back to the left, back to the right until it clicks again.

Thanks for the info for resetting the sensor.
