Bought my 1st BMW 2 months ago - got a 2005 320D. Boy was i in for a surprise!! Whole new driving experience. Pleasure to drive. Makes my 500 mile a week commute an absolute joy!

I do have one problem though. In the last few weeks, with the v cold weather, i have noticed a pronounced knocking sound coming from the engine when 1st started. This goes away after she heats up. Anyone got any idea what this could be? This only happens when it is cold weather.

Any help you can give is greatly appreciated

I'd have a look at the oil specs in the manual. Maybe a lighter oil until warmer weather?

Welcome to the Werkz.......Are you sure its knocking sound, because I know the secondary pump (smog pump) makes a sound that sounds a little like a knock, but more like a muffled tapping sound until the engine warms up......this is normal.

The oil im using is quite thin at 5w. (When i spoke to my mechanic on the phone he seemed to think it might be the oil as well) But im not sure about that

However the smog pump could be the answer also....to give you an idea of the sound it makes....,It has a rhythm to it like someone was tapping out a tune! it sounds a bit like what you would image a small spanner being tapped against metal would sound like.
