540 Engine Stutter and Cough

My 2001 540i (143K miles) experiences engine stutter between 1700 and 2000 rpm in drive or in 4th gear and occasional hard stutter when accelerating slowly from stop. Above 2000 RPM it will stutter occasionally but generally runs smooth. I have no loss of power or problem accelerating fast. I have replaced the spark plugs and ignition coils and have replaced the transmission fluid. I have no problems at lower speeds. Where do I look next?

Have you checked for vacuum leaks on the intake duct work between the AFM and throttle body, and around the intake manifold joins between the throttle body and intake manifold. Also check your "rear intake manifold cover" by starting the engine, let the idle stabilise and then pull the engine oil dipstick out, if the revs drop and then recover when you reinsert the dipstick, then its probably on its way out. Does your engine use much oil between changes?
