Oil in the coolant = Headgasket

Yea the timing belt and water pump, if it has a plastic impeller, needs to be replaced at 50k! this was the only engine that i know of BMW decided to put a timing belt in go figure. I have a '90 525i too. mine has 285k now and still running strong. most people don't know about the timing belt and thats why you dont see many m20 engine anymore. ;(

ok i got the head off and checked it for cracks did not see any head gasket looked ok looked like a good seal to block no leaks between cylnders maybe i will pull the pump and check that and the belt looks a little tired so i will change that also and i did not know about the plastic impeller maybe that was the problen all along any info is welcome and many thanks

A plastic impeller would be the reason for the overheating, but not the oil in the coolant, I suggest you have the head checked out by a pro and fit a new head gasket.

A quick & cheap way of checking your cylider head is to lay it
on a sheet of glass, this will alow you to see for your self if all is well.
