Here's a question for you professional car sellers....
Assuming both are the same price, and I'm going to drive about 8K to 10K miles per year, is it better to buy a 2001 M5 with lower miles (say 50K miles), or buy a 2003 with higher miles (say 80K miles)?
I'd think 2001. But that mostly has to do with my prediction that E39 M5 prices are going to rise in the near to mid term. In that market, lower miles are your friend.
Well, I thought some of the 01's had some defects, but ultimately you cant bring it down to numbers. Check out the owners and how they treat their cars. Are they young, or old? A race car driver or a soccer mom? Do they listen to Jazz or alternative rock? Do they maintain their car well. Do they service it at reputable shop and regularly. It's nto necessarily down to the number of miles on the car. When i was looking at e36 M3's I found some 90k miles M3s in better condition and what looked to be better taken care of than some 45k miles M3's.

I'm trying to envision a soccer mom driving an M5. :-)
Anyway.... as a 2000 E39 M5 driver/owner... I have 73k miles on mine now and it runs fantastic and has had minimal issues. My only major cost outlay has been for tires and upgrades, such as Angel Eyes, DVD NAV, iPod, Voice Activation and Bluetooth.
What major defects are you speaking of in 2001 prior M5's?
I would go with the '03 just because generally later in the model's production the kinks will have been worked out. Not necessarily true on every car, but theoretically you should have less problems with the 2003.
Personally I'd go with the 2003, like it was said earlier:
1) it ws the last year of the E39 M5
2) maintenance may be further off
3) 01 has more issues than 03 (theoretically since the kinks get worked out as the years go on)

no, worst I ever saw was a lady, probably 65 driving one of the cleanest, most beautifully kept black metallic E39 M5's ever (complete with black/imola two tone seats, polished exhaust, etc.).......problem was that she drove it like a grandma. My dad beat her out of the light in his 2001 Accord LX and he wasn't even trying (my Dad is completely anti-race, he says something to me if he's riding with me and I do 5 over). I wanted to offer to trade her cars, but figured it probably wouldn't happen....ha
My theory is there are people out there who don't even know what they're buying when they sign the check for a new M. Pity when there are so many out there who would properly stretch their legs but can't afford them.
