03' M5 overheating

Yesterday I was driving through my neghiborhood and the engine temp indicator came on my info center. The temp was all the way in the red and so I quickly switched on the heater and the a/c off. It was a warm day here in cali. But this has me worried. Espicially sice I replaced a Porsche 993 (a car with no coolant) with this M5 .
So my question is do these have crappy plastic impellors in the water pump that some german manufacturers love to use that totally love to suck? My car only has 63K on it so this is not right!

Yes, some of them do have crappy plastic impellers...but I don't know if that model year has them or not. You definitely are getting in the mileage zone where a new water pump would be a good idea.

It's also possible that the holes between your expansion tank and your radiator have become clogged, or that there are bubbles in your cooling system.

When you take off the oil cap, is there anything that looks pasty yellow or like cottage cheese?

Nope, coolant looks good. I think I have narrowed the problem down. It only occurs after a lot of driving, then I will stop at a convenience store, start up, and hit stop and go traffic again. I popped the hood last time and the secondary fan kicked in to save the day (way too late though, I was already at the end of the red zone temp wise). But the main fan was spinning so weakly I was able to stop it with my finger. So my fan clutch is bad, assuming it is not a magnetic fan clutch. Does anybody know if these cars have a normal liquid fan clutch or if it is magnetic?

... dont know which kind but if your cars hot and doesn't over heat at speed only stop and go and you can stop the fan with your hand at operating temp then the fan clutch is dead replace the plastic fan if it seems brittle and if you can afford it do your water pump to...

That is only true if the fan clutch is a liquid. If it is magnetic, as many are nowadays, the problem is electrical, in the computer or wiring to the clutch. If it is a normal mechanical clutch, then I'm gonna swap that bad boy out.

It's mechanical. And they have a reputation. And go ahead and replace the other stuff while you're in there.
