I was looking for a e36 under $9000, but I've acquired my family's 2003 Camry...so naturally I'm going to sell it asap and add the $ to my e36 fund for a M3. What I would like to know is what defects or problems should I look for on a 96-99 m3? thanks in advance
Defects? Most commonly known is the plastic impellor blade int he water pump that tends to breaka nd ends your cooling system down the pooper. Also other known defects of the e36 are a sagging headliner due to improper airflow when a jack stand pad falls off from underneath the car. Apparently air rushes up this hole, through the pillar,a nd causes the rear of the headliner to sag. Other defects? Dont worry about it. What people need to understand is you need to find the bext e36 M3 in the best condition they can afford. Find a respectable and legitimate BMW owner who takes care of his/her car.

Is there anything, like a subframe connector or something that will prevent this probblem?
~Alex
M3's have subframe reinforcement that reduces the risk of these problems, although it can certainly still happen. Active Autowerke does make a differential support bracket that helps a good deal. There are subframe reinforcements for non-M cars, but I'm not sure whether any are marketed for 96-99 M3's.
