Stick Shift Problem, Transmission

I have a 2001 E46 M3. Stick, 6 gears.

Earlier this week, I was coming off my exit from the highway in 5th gear. I was on the ramp when I tried to shift to 4th and the stick was stuck. It wouldn't move at all. I stopped on the side and finally after many attempts and a lot of strength pulled the stick out of 5th. I was able to place the stick, forcefully, into reverse, 1st, 3rd, and 5th. I got my car towed to the BMW dealership and they told me that I need a new Trans. They said that it will cost me about $7,700 for a new trans and labor.
Has anyone had this problem or knew someone with this problem?
My warranty expired 2 1/2 month ago, the 4 years was up. I have 51k miles right now, which is still less than the factory warranty of 55k.
The service manager would not hook it up at all. Some people told me that it's quite possible that it may be a different problem and not my trans. I'm thinking that the dealership could be ripping me off.
Please help.
