This past Friday I picked up a used '98 M3 (red, black int, sedan) in fantastic condition. It clearly got a lot of love. I have had bimmers before and various other sports cars, but this is the first M.

I plan to drive the car a while before I really consider any modifications. The only thing I added was my Valentine 1.

I see that there is a BMW car club of America - can anyone recommend or warn?

I'm a member. There is a nice card in my wallet now and I have a BMW CCA sicker on my back windshield.

The reason I joined was you get 10% off all parts you buy. I paid $40 for my membership, then a week later went out and spent $1k on dinan parts, and the savings paid for my membership a couple of times over.
