hmm definately a vanos noise. could be lifters, but do me a favor and check to see if your plugs are snug. it sounds oddly familiar, a buddy had a similar noise and it turned out one of the plugs was rattling because it was loose.

i dont think its the plugs because ive changed the VCG and the noise was there b4 and still is there after....
Ok... first off... you have vanos problems... actually, I should say... vanos noise... your vanos still works fine.. (most likely)... but the chain is just rubbing a little bit due to a failed or weak chain guild.. Dont worry about that.
As for the ticking... that is normal for M3s... actually BMWs for that matter. Seeing as we have the added great thing called hydralic lifters... and such... its ok... this noise will get louder if you had just started the car and the oil level was not at what is is meant to be at. Resulting in about ten to fifteen seconds of ticking due to an engine that does not have a full oil level. It takes time to pump that oil up to the valve sprays.
Other than that... it sounds normal... If you think its horribly loud... take it to a shop that knows more than we can tell you over the internet.
I think its is on the bmw engine parts related problem.I agree that it should be serviced by a professional mechanic rather than by yourself.BMW is an expensive car,and I would not be happy if these things get messed up.
I have the same noise I have replaced just about everything including the entire vanos system. I am an automotive tech and I am definitely thinking its the lifters, but since I dont want to take my cyclinder head off of my car im just dealin with it
