Pretty much as the question suggests, does anyone have any tips for buying an e36 3.0 m3? Im gonna look at some over the next few days and any help would be much appreciated!
are there any notorious weak points to look for, or any procedures that should have been done as part of thr servicing etc?
The FAQ section of this site contains such tips, but one i might add....
when looking for a sports car such as this, I always looking for one as close to stock as possible. Used cars with big wheels, engine mods, etc. USUALLY elude to the fact that they have been DRIVEN. They jump out at you because they look nice, but I would rather spend my post purchase money on upgrades instead of repairs.
Also, #1 buyin tip with BMW cars, buy one with records! BMW makes great cars that last, but if they are not regularly maintained it will certainly shorten the life of the car.
lookin to spend bout £9000. most for that price are 1995-1996, with milage upwards of 70,000.
seen a great lookin techno violet one but it has 93,000 on it with full bmw service history etc but this seems too high milage?
any thought/ideas guys?
Take your time to buy one. Mostly there is a lot of cars for selling, so you should have been enough choice! Try to get a car with lower mileage, certainly for a car from '95-'96 :wink

93k is a little high, but not totally unreasonable. it is after all an 8-9 year old car.
sorry to say this, but mods or no mods, EVERY m3 is driven hard. yes. every one. period. it is the nature of the animal. grandmas just don't buy m3s. they just don't.
let me take that back. yes there probably are some m3s that were gently driven. but all five of them are spoken for right now.
i don't know if this is the case with the e46, but with an e36 or e30, the ///M is some kind of german translation for testosterone. i'd say the majority of m3 owners take obssessive care of their car. they are driven hard, but they are maintained. but it is always better to get full service documentation if possible. but despite all their denial, i can almost guarantee you that it was also driven hard.
also sorry to stop askin "silly" questions but does the 3.0 m3 have the individual throttles on every cylinder like the evo does? jus outta interest!!!

fiddlesticks they must have taken it down.
it is a nice PDF file that is printer-friendly and has lots of useful info. it is specifically for E36 M3. if you want it, PM me and i can send it.
