WILL SOMEONE GIVE ME THEIR OPINION ON THIS.
MY GIRLFRIEND OWNS A 2000 M5 WITH 61000 MILES ON IT.
SHE WAS GETTING IT SERVICED BY A PERSON SHE KNEW WHO USE TO BE A BMW MECHANIC AND NOW RUNS HIS DADS SHOP, ANYWAY I THINK HE WAS ONLY CHARGING HER $50 FOR AN OIL AND FILTER CHANGE AND THE LAST TIME HE DID IT WAS AROUND 50K MILES ALONG WITH THE SOME SCHEDULED MAINT.
NOT LONG AFTER THAT I WAS NOTICING NOISE AT START UP, AND I DIDN'T CHECK THE OIL BECAUSE IT WAS JUST CHANGED, AND THOUGHT MAYBE IT'S JUST NORMAL FOR THER CAR. FINALLY I GOT TIRED OF HEARING THE NOISE AND CHECKED THE OIL AND IT DIDN'T EVEN REGISTER ON THE DIPSTICK. SO I DECIDED TO CHANGE THE OIL MYSELF AND WHEN DRAINING THE OIL THERE WAS ONLY ABOUT 3 QUARTS IN THE ENGINE! NEEDLESS TO SAY WERE PISSED OFF ABOUT THAT BECAUSE WHO KNOWS WHAT THAT DID TO THE ENGINE, I WAS HOPING WITH PUTTING THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF OIL IN THE ENGINE THE NOISE WOULD GO AWAY, NO SUCH LUCK IT STILL SOUNDS LIKE THE BOTTOM END IS RATTLING THEN CLEARS OUT. THE ENGINE ALSO HAS A NOISE UP TOP
WHEN IDLING, I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT COULD BE EITHER.

ANYWAY DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON THE NOISES, I'M THINKING THE NOISE AT START UP ARE THE MAIN BEARINGS AND THE OTHER NOISE AT IDLE I HAVE NO CLUE. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Take that car to a certified BMW serivice center. don't act surprised at the noise - you really shouldn't go 11,000 miles on oil. It is the driver's responsibility to service and take care of their vehicle. no sense in being pissed. Since you noticed the noise soon after the change, perhaps the engine also has a problem with oil consumption.

THE MILEAGE IS AN ESTIMATE THE OIL IS CHANGED BETWEEN 5K AND 6K MILES.
HE SERVICED IT AT 52K MILES AND THEN I CHANGED IT ABOUT 60K WHICH IS A LITTLE MORE THAN THAN USUAL, BUT I NOTICED THE NOISE SOON AFTER HIS SERVICE.

I've heard an engine noise at start up since I purchased my '01' M5. Dealer has told me it is the normal sound made by the VANOS system. I remember reading a post a long time ago about an M5 that was particularly loud and the dealer had replaced the VANOS system.

If your oil level was so low, why wasn't the car warning you of it. A little beyond a quart low and my "oil level low" appears on the dash screen each time the engine is turned off. Let it go much farther and the warning message should appear and stay on while the engine is running.

Please let us know what it turns out to be so we may all continue to gian knowledge.

in general, you should get the oil changed every 3,000 miles or so, even with snynthetic, just as a safety measure.

NO LIGHTS CAME ON WARNING OF A LOW OIL LEVEL.

I have an m3 and M5. Much of the advice above is correct.The vanos makes the noise in most cases. Had it changed at 89k on the m3 . But even on the m5 it is a little noisy at startup with 29K. Suggest the oil should be changed at 3000 miles with synthetic religiously to get the longest life from this vanos and keep the noise down. If your m5 does not get less noisy after warm up then the vanos may be suspect and need to get changed. Also if the car does not seem as quick as it used to be it is another sign.
Somene said the low level oil light should have come on and that person is right . It should come on after a quart low. M5's use oil and this has to be watched and proper oil levels need to be maintained for component life ..Like the VANOS. My 2001 has a place in the trunk to carry two quarts as part of the standard trunk configuration. This space is there for a reason. It is part of the deal for a car like this.
