US M3'S NOT REALLY M3'S ONLY 328'S

Someone told me that us M3's are not really m'3s as they only have either a 328 or 330 engine.Do you not get the Double VANOS 3.2 engine or the older single vanos 3.0. If thats true then how can people in the us clain to have m3's if they are nothing more than 328's with an m-tech kit and wheels.Can anyone tell me the true facts.

that information is false. Whoever told you this was wrong. The US still gets the M engine but its a little detuned from the euro version.

the US S50/S52 and the Euro S50/S52 are completely different engines. the US engines lack things like individual throttle bodies and double vanos (on the 3.2), its true that the US doesnt get the 'real' M engines but they are still fairly improved versions of the 325 and 328 engines

Anyway is it or is it not the proper euro,from the factory,321bhp 3.2 96 onwards or pre 96 the 3.0 285bhp.thats what i mean U.S. cars dont have.this is the verry essence of the "m" range in europe so without these engines how can they truely be m3's........I rest my case!

sure its an M3 because americans worry about emmissions laws more, they had to detune the euro M3 into the M3 we know,

IM NOT TRYING TO PROOVE ANYTHING...I JUST GOT A BIT CARRIED AWAY COS ALL MY MATES GO ON ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME.I JUST WONDERED WHAT THE CORRECT FACTS WERE.I WOULD RATHER PUT UP WITH A LOWER POWER ENGINE AND LIVE IN GLORIOUS WEATHER THAN HAVE WHAT I'VE GOT AND PUT UP WITH NO SUNSHINE AND RAIN DAILY..........I'M JUST BITTER!!!! you are making incorrect assumptions.

you are assuming US M3s use M50/M52/M54 engines instead of S50/S52/S54 engines. that is wrong.

US M3s have S50/S52/S54 engines.

ALL US-spec M3s begin with the VIN WBS..... which is the factory designation. WBS = BMW Motorsport Gmbh, Munich.... BMW Motorsport, i.e., ///M division.
Vehicles with M50/M52/M54 engines are made by BMW-AG in Munich (WBA) or US (4US). BMW-AG is separate from BMW-Motorsport... but of course you already knew this right?

S50 = 3.0 L 6 cylinder DOHC M power, variable cams (VaNoS)
S50US = 3.0 L 6 cylinder DOHC M power, variable intake cam (VaNoS)

S52 = 3.2 L 6 cylinder DOHC M power, dual VaNoS, multiple throttles
S52US = 3.2 L 6 cylinder DOHC M power, variable intake cam (VaNoS)

S54 = 3.2 L 6 cylinder DOHC M power, dual vanos, same on both sides of the pond

from the list above, you can see that on the E36 they did things like change the valve timing to comply with EPA emissions. i belive they also changed the injectors and emissions downstream.
