Smg Modes

Just got a 2005 M3 with SMG II.

Is this thing supposed to remember my last setting? Every time I get into the car I have to change to the Drive Logic mode I want.

Anyone familiar with SMG setting?

By default it's supposed to remember your last setting. If it's not, you can ask the dealer to program it. The only exception is if you're in the 6-sport mode. Since you need to toggle DSC off to activate it, it won't remember that but will default to 5.

Thanks for the reply. I have a couple more questions if anyone knows. I've had the car for three days and I'm trying to figure out some stuff.

I see that I'm a little lazy and keep using the Auto mode for day to day driving. The smootest mode seems to be 1 (Winter Mode).
Which mode do you keep it in for day to day driving?

Also, do you keep the lights setting to auto? I have to turn on the fog lights every time. I had a 2001 330ci and had to turn on the fog lights everytime. You'd figure they would realize people who turn on their fog lights want to have them on the next time as well.

Also, for reverse, how can I program the passenger side mirror to go to the possition I want. It currently goes so far down I can't see anything. When in reverse, if I try to move the mirror, it goes back to the regular position. When I move it to the position I want, it only changes the regular forward position.

Lastly, anyway to turn off PDC? There was a buton on my X5.

I don't know anything about SMG but I'll tackle the mirror and light question...

The switch that controls which mirror side you want to adjust controls if the passenger side mirror tilts downward in reverse. To disable that feature, click the switch to the passenger side.

I leave my lights on auto. Some say this will decrease the life of the lights (if you have the xeon option) but I personally don't care. If they burn out in 10+ yrs, I'll just have them replaced.

For SMG, I rarely use the DriveLogic mode as it annoys me, personally, to feel a lurch that's a bit unpredictable when it's shifting, so I don't have any recommendations on that front. I only use it when I have to use my cell phone or am stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

For the mirror, I don't think you can adjust how far it goes. As gpoints said, you can turn it off, but it's an all-or-none affair as far as I know.

I leave my lights to Auto, but yeah, I don't believe you can set the fog-lights to remember the last setting. I don't think you can toggle PDC.

Suggest you have your dealer change this setting. When I first got my M3 it was one of the first things I had them alter. Most of the custom settings are key-specific such as mirror position, etc, and I think they are memory-specific as well (i.e. make sure you have a stored seat position).

Anyway, if you guys haven't tried this yet, I can vouch for the instructions. My service manager did not know about it, but it obviously worked.

Here is what they need to do to activate the custom reverse mirror tilt settings:

1. Connect the car to the DIS system.
2. Choose "1. Car Memory"
3. Choose "9. Seat/Mirror Memory"
4. Choose "2. Mirror Memory Automatic Kerb Parking Function"
5. Choose "1. Active" (It is set to "Inactive" by default)
6. Upload the new settings to the car.
7. Turn the ingnition off and then back on.
8. Disconnect the car from the DIS system.

To position the mirror:
1. Push the mirror selector switch to the passenger side.
2. Put the car in reverse. (The mirror should tilt down)
3. Adjust the mirror position to what ever makes you happy.
4. Put the car back into N or 1. (The mirror should tilt back up)

That's it. Now when ever you back up the mirror will adjust to your custom settings, instead of all the way down. Please note that the mirror adjustment selector switch must be set to the passenger side for this to work. This is opposite of the way it works by default.
