Below is a collection of postings i posted on another M3 forum hoping someone might be able to help. If your bored enough to read it all and think you can help me feel free to reply. Any help is much appreciated

I don't know where to start with this one, but here we go....

My evo is under warranty. Its recently had a full solonoid pack and new sphere, a new potentiometer on the selector, new SMG software on the computer, and new bonnet switches on the front (some silly safety feature).

When approaching a left turn at about 40mph in 4th gear, I try to manually downshift to 3rd, but the car wont select gear until going straight for a few second. Now, before you all mention it, the top SMG specialist was with me for a test drive and we had disconnected the lateral and longtitudinal sensors in the boot. Therefore, the car should change gear whilst going round the corner. But it doesn't. However, it will go round the same bend at the same speed, driven in the same manner to the right, without any problem selecting 3rd gear.

Is everybody still with me?

The car upshifts with no problem and for the most part, downshifts with no problems apart from 4th to 3rd on left hand bends. Driving tha same bend going from 4th to 2nd, the gears engage perfectly.

Has anyone here had similar problems? and did you fix them?

My BMW dealer has been through the whole Diagnostic CD with me but we haven't found the reason for this. He has also asked me to see if I can locate another SMG1 car near me to do a like for like comparision with. I know most of you are in the States but is there anyone on here from the North West of England?

....Next Episode,

Less than 24 hours after getting it back from the dealer, whos said there wasn't anything detectable wrong with the car , it lost all forward gears on a roundabout 25 miles away from home. I eventually found first gear, and then second, but used 1/2 a tank of gas getting the car home at 25mph.

So once again, thanks to BMW extended warranty people, I am in possession of the fastest BMW in the showroom...... a hire car. And the main dealer has 4 days to test my M3 to destruction until they fix the fault.

Even though the top mechanic at the dealer sweet talked me by telling me he thought my car belonged to an owners club member, I am absolutely sick to death of this car. I've used it since October and its been rescued 3 times by Emergency call out due to gearbox problems and had a host of other work done..... they have had the car for longer than I have.

....Another Episode,

I have the car back (again), it is changing gear when it's supposed to, except........round left hand bends. Although the problem seems slightly improved it aint fixed. I shall have to take the car for a good beasting round the country lanes and see how it goes. Apart from that it got me to work and back, so that is an improvement on last week.

....Yet Another Episode,

Its lasted 2 days this time, I tried to down shift from 6th to 5th on the motorway with no throttle input, it just flashed on the dash for about 10 seconds, then something went click under the gear stick and the cog fault light came on. At least this time an error code has been registered. So I had only 5 gears for the rest of the day. I took it straight to the dealer after work tonight and they read the codes and reset the gearbox. The master technician is on vacation till next week but the error report is waiting for him when he gets back

....And Finally,

Just got the car back from the main dealers (Williams BMW in Liverpool), they have had it for 5 weeks exactly. And guess what...... its exactly the same

I have complained to BMW UK who have agreed to sent the Regional Techincal Manager to have a look at the car in a few weeks, but in the meantime I have booked it in with another main dealer in a town about 15 miles away to see if they come up with anything new.

I do like the car, but my patience is running thin now, any more hassle and it'll be getting sold ghead

Howie

Latest Update for those who are vaguely interested in this sad story:-

Halliwell jones in Southport had the car 12-17th May and I got it back working as it was supposed to for the first time since Ive owned it.
It lasted till the 13th June then lost 3rd gear, the gearbox was reset and gear positioned relearned the same day, but within 500 meters I had lost 5th gear and by the time I had got back to work I had lost another three.

Halliwell's have had the car since the 15th June and I havent seen it since. Luckily Mondial Assistance have provided me with a hire car so I havent been that inconvenienced.

This time they have changed lateral sensors, the ECU, and it still aint working. so they have now ordered another actuator for the back of the box. This is the same actuator they previously changed less than 6 months ago....

continued next time.................

A little off topic, and sorry I can't help with your problem, but does your 944 turbo really run flawlessly when compared with the M3? I'm deciding between a 968 and an E36 M3 as my next car, I'd just like to know.

This is a really bad story! Sorry to hear about that. I have never heard before about this problem and it seems very strange the dealer is not able to fix it. What about a gearbox swap, another SMG1 or even a manual 6-speed???

I bought the 944 back in 1998 with 50,000 miles on. It had a full service history with it, and was about the 20th car I'd been to see before buying. In the past 7 years its been driven pretty hard and is now showing 89,000miles. Now I know that is only about 5000 miles a year, but as I don't drive it that often, when I do drive it, it gets battered.
I originally bought the M3 for the long drive to work but due to all the hassle lately I have also been considering a 968 as a replacement for it. The 944 has been that reliable I can't believe it. Its the only car Ive not managed to break. It seems a bit mad to buy a 968 for work but another semi-auto (tiptronic) car would be ideal for being stuck in highway traffic.

I'm still not sure about the M3, when it works its great, but its only worked faultlessly for 3 weeks in the past 8 months, and its all down to that SMG box. If your going to buy a manual M3 you should be ok. Personally it doesnt thrill me enough to want to keep it much longer. Its a fast car, but doesnt seem fast. It feels like their is a ton of weight on the front. I'm so used to the light and agile feel of the Porsche that the BMW doesnt seem as safe round corners.

The 968's are meant to be a lot smoother (and probably more economical) to drive than the 944 turbo, but I like my boost that much that if one car had to go it would be the M3.

I won't get shut of the 944 until I can afford a 993 or 911 turbo, so Its going to be in the garage for a few more years at least.

I wouldnt hesitate choosing between the BMW and Porsche, the Porsche would win every time. Below is a link to a review I did a while back, it may be of use.

That review helped a great deal, especially the part about the comfort (I'm 6' 5" myself and fitting in cars is always a big concern). Thanks a lot!

@24valve
I went to a Porsche garage called "Ninemeister" close to me the other day. they do a supercharger kit for the 968 that gives just on 400 BHP for the sum of 5000 fitted. I know it sounds expensive, but it can be removed and sold separately when selling the vehicle.

Good News on the M3 front.

No they havent fixed it yet, or lost it, or got it stolen..... but
theyve just given me a brand spanking new M3 Cabriolet as my hire car for the remainder of the time mine is in the garage.... to stop me moaning. So they can now take as long as they want with it.

Isnt it amazing what you get when you cause some s**t by telephoning the people higher up the BMW ladder.

Howie

Another month has gone by.... still no car back. We are now into the 13th week of waiting. My car has now been shipped to Halliwell Jones in Chester. The gearbox has been condemned and authorisation for a new one was given over a week ago. I'm frightened to ring up in case they say its fixed, but I reckon it won't be. Anyway I have put 4000 miles on their M3 Cabriolet, so for once I can let them keep it for as long as it takes... LOL

Just for the record my diary now shows that we are on day 249 of this year and my car has been in the dealers for 135 of those days. Thats over 55% of the year!

Is that m3 cabrio you're driving an SMG also? I don't blame you for wanting to keep it as long as possible. It suscks that your M3 has given you so much trouble, though. I would probably get rid of it, too.

Hi Howie,
Unfortunately, I am also facing some simililar problem with my SMG1. While driving, in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear, all of a sudden the gear shifts as if to neutral gear with the the symbol "E", a triangle & the gear box warning signs light up for 2 to 5 sec. then it shifts back to 2nd or 3rd gear & the car starts moving normaly.
And the same way the official dealers here in Russia cant find what the hell is wrong with it!!!!
You are lucky in the sence that the dealer has given you a M3 cabrio for the time being!
