rough running

I am having a problem that comes and goes, usually when i am doing some spirited driving. Car will be running great, then it feels and sounds like it is running on 3-4 cylinders and the check engine light comes on. After a few minutes it starts to run fine again. Car is a 99 M3 auto.
Any ideas?

Could be a camshaft sensor on its way out, when was the last time it was serviced ?, also could be your fuel filter has crap in it.

I have owned it for 3 yrs and I have never serviced the sensor. wouldn't that make it run rough all the time?
