the 2.0L S14 was found in the Italian 320is. if it is a M3 i would think it wouldve evolved with the other european m3's (ie: evoI & evoII= 2.3L, evoIII = 2.5L). the S14 320is was created for tax reasons, but i dont think that would stop bmw from selling the M3 in italy despite the tax premium. i could be wrong though.
M3Dude... pretty sure he was asking about an Italian engine.. so if you didnt have any info for an italian engines.. ok nevermind.. I'm not going down that road....
I've called a few BMW dealerships before to get specifications on valve clearances... and stuff like that.. I'm pretty sure you could do that same.. they have a pretty good data base for info.

you can go down that road i shouldn't of said anything if it wasn't going to help, but i wasn't paying attention to the fact that he wanted to know about an italian car when i replied the first time
Sinds there was a high tax fee in itali during the late 80's on 2.0l+ engines, BMW produced the m3 with 2.3l and 2.0l engines. The last is called 320IS M3 and is (as far as i know) identical to the 2.3l M3 (including M-power logo's on the engine). Both are s14 engines, but the 2.0l has a shorter strole. I can buy a 89'er M3 from italie, I want to make sure I'm not buying a 2.0l for a 2.3 price (though the 2.0l is still doing 7.3 sec to 100 km/h).

you are correct that S14 had to be destroked to not exceed the 2.0L+ bracket, but the S14 320is did not use the M3 body. all 320is' ive seen, came with factory Mtech2 body kits and would most likely have M or M-technik logos in various places, but no M3 badging. so it will be very easy to tell which car is the 2L and which is the 2.3; when i first read your post i thought you were asking how to tell the two engines apart and that i dont know :P
here's a picture of a 320is that clearly shows the standard body style plus the S14, and you could always try to search through www.e30.de to find a handful of more 320is'
