I've owned my "new" M3 sedan for about a week now. It's a 1998 model with auto tranmission and only 51k miles, arctic silver with a gray interior. Purchased it in eastern Pennsylvania and drove it back to northwestern Chicago with only a break for gas and food, 14.5 hours. I-80 and 81 thru Penn, Ohio, northern Indiana, and I-90 thru Illinois. Terrific handling, acceleration, braking and the like. Even got 30mpg! Of course, tried to contain myself and keep it under 80mph until I get a little more familiar with the car, but so far, it's everything I was expecting.
One thing is puzzling me, tho. I've checked the owners manual and couldn't find any reference to it, but every time I drive it, at some point there is 3 beeping sounds coming from, what sounds like, the left front dash behind the left side of the steering wheel. Not loud and no warning lights associated with it either, but just "beep, beep beep". I have ordered a Bentley manual, but it hasn't arrived yet. Can anybody clue me in?
I'm not aware of any aftermarket security systems. I'll take a look in that area. Is there anything specific I should be looking for? anything that will standout that id's it as aftermarket?

well a bmw module would have BMW written all over it. so if it dosent. its aftermarket.

Three tones? That is usually associated with the OBC (onboard computer) letting the driver know it is 37 degrees or cooler outside. I guess because at this temp. ice can form on bridges and whatnot.
Also related to the OBC, is the speed limit limiter. If the previous owner set a max speed limit, it will beep once that speed is broken.
I have posted the same question. I have an E30 and mine does the same thing. No one seems to know what the deal with the three beeps are. My car is running normal, i dont think it would be the max speed limit thing because mine does it at random times, Very Puzzling-

It might be the speed limiter... I think it makes three beeps but not sure. Check the OBC and on the "speed" button see if a little tiny red light is lit. That means the speed limiter is activated.
wow. Never seen this many replies to this kind of post.
It is the memo function. The car's clock can be set to chime once an hour. Simply press memo on the OBC to disable it. jlphan was also correct, but not about this particular beep.

Mine does the same thing.. could not figure out what it was..
then I took the sterio faceplate off first before I turned off the ignition.. no three beeps.. so the three beeps came from the sterio.. reminder to take it off.. Pioneer!

Naw.. if you take the faceplate off .. before turning the ignition off.. you will not hear the beeps..
It beeps after you shut the ignition off and the faceplate is still on to remind u to take it off..

Hey everyone, thanks for all the replys. I checked my OBC and there were a lot of settings, ie temp control, speed limiter, and the like. I tried to reset everything to see if that will work. I'll let you know after I get home from work today.
My '98 M3/4 did the exact same thing just before the battery died. It would randomly chime three times as you mentioned - couldn't figure it out for the life of me. My battery died shortly thereafter and I've not heard the chime since replacing it six months ago.
You might have your battery checked just to be safe.
