I would guess between $15 - 18,000, but then again I own a 97 and could just be hoping it is worth more... www.Kbb.com is your best bet for a decent value.

you are supposed to be able to find one under 15 grand but its usually pretty hard. Look ALOT and you might be able to come across a steal. My 98 m3 convertible was 18 grand to start with and i negotiated down to 14

I got mine for $10,500. Needed new shocks and struts, fan clutch, and coolant reservoir. Didn't matter much about the shocks/struts since I was gonna upgrade them anyway :-)
Prices on nada and KBB won't help depending on the market. I know in the midwest, that almost every M3 that I looked at between 14k-20k was sold in a matter of days. Supply and Demand kicked the hell out of KBB. If your looking for a 97 with an A/T you must be looking for a sedan. I will help you since I did all the research on this. A/T only came in sedans or in 1995 coupes (which at the time I looked, there was only 12 for sale in the whole US). They also came in 1998-00 convertibles until smg came to the usa. I may be wrong, and someone correct me if I am, but finding a A/T is hard to find and is not worth it. If she has to have it, go with the converible.
