I'm considering picking one up and would like to know if there is anything in particular to look out for. I'm looking for one with about 80,000 on it. Most likely a 95.
I've heard they are reliable up until about 120,000. Is that generally true? How are they from a maintenance standpoint? Are regular maintenance and repairs doable for the general car fan?
Thanks...Any answers are truly appreciated. I'm looking forward to buying one.
As long as the car has been properly maintained it should do much more then 120,000 miles. Normal maintenance is no problem for most people. Try to get maintenance records if possible. Most of these cars have owners that take very good care of them. Good luck and enjoy.

did BMW ever make a 4door m3 for 97 thats what i really want to know
my bad i didnt put 4 door when i asked that one 97 question but i really need to know its important
4-door, e36 M3s were sold for two years - '97 and '98. They can be had in your price range but you will be looking at either high mileage, or specimens that are not in particularly good condition. An unmolested '98 M3 4-door with decent mileage and a manual tranny will be in the low to mid-$20k range.

Because my dads m3 4door is pretty bad ass and its a 97 its a 5 speed he changed the black back slots and bought the 318 rear thingymabab on ebay so it doesnt look like an m3. Its got a remus exhaust so it sounds pretty awesome. not a deep v8 but more like a big fart
the SL's are big pimpin, and i love the hard top, but you can only get them in auto trans. but maybe you were goin to get an SMG M3 anyways..just drive both and see which one you cant live without
