Overheat on '95 M3

I recently purchased a '95 M3 from a private owner. Come to find out he had a water-pump failure, and had to have it towed to the dealer and the WP replaced. I wonder if the engine overheated or if a warning light was probably set before any engine damage occured. What happens when an E36 begins to overheat? I assume there is a warning light...is there anything else that would prevent/discourage the driver from causing serious damage???? Thanks for the help.

If the car wasn't driven after the overheat, before the fix, it should be ok. If the car was driven with little/no coolant, after overheat, then there could be major problems. However, you would probably notice a constant coolant leak, maybe an oil leak from a cracked block.

I think someone on the board had their WP go on them (that model year, and a few otehrs, had plastic impellers in the WP so these overheats are not uncommon). Maybe they have more information for ya.

When metal gets hot then cools down it shrinks. So rings or pistons, if they got too hot, could shirnk just enough to make you lose a good amount of compression.

what happens when your loosing compression is that the cylinder walls break down near the top (usually where the stroke is full) and combustion starts to wear away at the walls along with other attibuting factors, once this becomes great enough, your compression begins to slip because pressure is lost out the sides where the cylinder wall has worn.

i think you should check to see if you have any cracks in the thermostat housing also check your radiator, you might have a cracked or leaking spigot on the rad.
