I am kinda newer to the luxury car market and have a quick question about how BMW operates.

I guess I have been hearing about the M5 and how awesome it's going to be for roughly 2 full years now, but it just never seems to arrive. No dates as to when it's coming, no announcements planned. Car and Driver has the review of how GREAT it is compared to the Mercs, but that was late last year.

Is this the most bizarre marketing you have ever heard. Imagine seeing a Super Bowl commercial about so something that is just so incredible, so groundbreaking, so revolutionary....then going to your local store foaming at the mouth only to be told.....uhhhhh it's coming......uhhhh soon....I guess..maybe later this year....but someday when it gets here, it's gonna really kick your a$$.

Seriously, am I missing something? This has to be the longest build up for a product in history.

I guess I work in marketing, so in my field, you have the product on the store shelves, on the way to the car lots, or ready on the net....then hype the crap outta it and make your money.

Last thing...so the last M5 was made in 2003....then a 3 year wait for the new one... Anyone have info as to why that is? Am I wrong on this? I can't seem to find a car newer then 2003 on the web. Again, these are all things that you would be taught in marketing 101. You have a hot product...you pump it out year after year with little changes to keep it fresh..

I think this car will be one of the greatest cars ever made....just a little frustrating.

Thanks for any input and be gentle....I'm a newbie

I think it took them roughly 3 years because totally redesigning a new M car takes time. The M series is the ultimate of the ultimate of driving machines for BMW, and I am sure they wanted to do a good job and make this new M5 perfect. After all, wouldnt you want your special line of products to be reeeealllly good?. Probably will be an awesome car.

You also got to keep in mind that it really isn't ALL BMW's MARKETING! I'd wager that a lot of the "hype" and whatnot isn't a direct marketing ploy so much as hearsay and word of mouth - what you get when such a highly anticipated car is... well... anticipated. Think about videogame consoles - the Nintendo DS came out this year, but it was talked about for 2 years previous.
Also think about the M5 as well as other M histories... Having an M is like setting the baseline for other brands to be compared - it took many car manufacturers 10 years to catch up with the current/old M, and now BMW is unveiling the new one - just so it will take others another 10 years to catch up. In BMW's minds, that's how it's been, why should it be any different? Why rush?
Anyway, that's my two cents as to the psychology of the anticipation.
But like I was saying before, it's being hyped so much that the hype itself is self-perpetuating out of control. I do agree with you - let's get the car already, yah?

I think they were dovelopping this car way before 2003, it was out in europe in 2004. So to make a brand new model I would say the design started back in 2000 or even 2001.

The M5 is BMW's "trade-mark" per-say...BMW totally flipped the whole car industry upside down when they introduced a high performance luxury sedan...of course you shouldn't mess with your cornerstone and bring out something mediocre to follow the E39 M5. Just think how long it probably took to design the new V-10! And to really make it a breath taking car! The new M5 has been shoreside for quite some time now (I have a friend working for the VDC in Oxnard CA he's probably one of the first guys to see it up close and personal) and we are currently getting ready to recieve our first one here. I'm excited to see it (I've heard lots of good things so far!!)
