are you trying to decide between new m5 and new m3 or between all types new and used, if you want new i would say m5 only cause that is the amazingest car ever, and you could prolly do some subtle mods and make it eat up almost anything you will find on the higway, but i would suggest m3 if you want a car that is agile and can go around the track also with an m3 you could buy an aa supercharger and really be kickin ass through the curves, but m5 is power, luxury, and class, m3 is all these with more agility and two less doors
well i guess a good used car is as good as any new car except the pricetag that is:P
would like to do some serrius modding so just chaning filters and exhasuts isnt enough...maybe turbo or supercharging and maybe even some minior things inside the wonderfull engine

if you want to do some serious modding i would reccomend the e36 m3 lots of aftermarket parts and you can make crazy power with forced induction, plus you will have more money for mods, check this highly modified car out Click me
also to find a nice used e36 m3 go to autotrader.com wait nevermind you live in europe so i don't know how much e36 m3's costs over there but they are frikin awesome the put out like 321hp stock, go for the e36 m3 deffinetely
any suggestions except turbo and super will be taken very highly in regard since im not very good on these things but like to try out stuff...theres a first time for anything

Some of the first steps one take towards improving such a machine is usually the intake... debaffle it or just remove that and install a cold air intake or a more free flowing intake... you can find a lot of upgrade tips at:
But... after you let it get more air.. you got to let it exhale... a more free flowing exhaust would help... You can find a few From AA Tuning.. Turnermotorsports.com... ect.. just do some searchin around and you will find some.
Next would probably be a computer upgrade... both sites have some of those too... so just look around.. slowing but surely you will find what most people do.
I can understand the need to "Personalise" a car and the requirement for as much speed as possible (in safe places of course) but both of these cars are awesomely fast as it it - the e39 has also won so many awards it's unreal.

Personally I would go for the M5 cos it's bigger and I just love the styling - also it will keep with it's little brother tne M3 without any problems.
I thnink all you can do without major (and costly) work on the engine is as 97alpineM3 says - induction, exhaust & chip. Mind these alone could cost you up to £1500 (sorry don't know what that is in euro's).
M5's are bloody expensive though - I was looking online for them yesterday and fully loaded 2001 models are still fetching up to £27000 in the UK.
keep in mind people he's in europe so who knows if aa can help him out, like he said if you don't want forced induction you can get intake chip exhaust and that's all you should need but if you did go forced induction i don't know what kinda crazy power you would get outa the euro engine, but again i have no knowledge on uprading a euro engine i think chip exhasut intake would be the only thing you need to do
